Project managers working on customer side in projects under contract need competent education in Project Business Management, in addition to classical internal project management topics. They also need support in form of consulting and coaching, particularly when complications emerge.
Knowledge and skills in project management remain relevant, but are no more sufficient for the management of the increasingly complex project supply networks (PSNs). In addition, project managers need to be educated in the business aspects of projects under contract and in the development of a "Mission Success First" culture across the entire project.

External procurement of project work enables organizations to tap the assets of other organizations – sellers – for own project purposes. This brings new challenges, which increase with growing size, complexity and opacity of the project supply networks, PSNs.
Project managers must respond to these challenges with project-related business competencies; they must learn project business management. However, there is so far no sufficient education offered ]for the effective management of opportunities and risks that emerge with procurement of project work to PSNs. Our qualification for customer-side project business managers closes this gap.
